My name is Marilyn Perkins. I live in Boise, ID and I am retired. I've always worked with jobs that worked with people, I love working with people. My reason for coming to Positive Changes Hypnosis was that I was really going through a lot of stress in my life and I was having a hard time dealing with it. Then I needed to have shoulder surgery. I had a birth injury. When I was born, they had to break my arm and shoulder to get me out so my shoulder has never been completely normal. I did all the things I wanted to do all my life, but all at once, I got a tear in my shoulder and then I started getting arthritis and I couldn't use my right arm. I was really in a lot of pain. I did get into a good shoulder clinic here in Boise and I found someone to do the surgery but I was really nervous, so I decided to come to Positive Changes.
The reason I chose to do hypnosis is because in 1974 I was in a head-on car crash with my sister on the highway. My sister had minor injuries, but I had a severe spinal injury and a dislocated right shoulder, the same one that was injured at birth, as well as a broken jaw. Concurrently, I began having T.M.J problems because of the broken jaw. On two occasions, in Canada and San Francisco, the jaw became very painful and I couldn't open my mouth at all.
The only Oral Surgeon who would attempt the repair required that I undergo six weeks of treatment by a psychiatrist to teach me self-hypnosis and deep relaxation. This was necessary, as I would undo the benefits of the surgery if I continued the clenching and grinding of my teeth. The surgery turned out to be a complete success, due in part to the use of relaxation therapy. That was my first experience with relaxation technology, and I have received the benefits for the past twelve years.
Because of my previous experiences, I was a big believer in hypnosis and that's why I came to Positive Changes. I think it's been very successful for me. I did have the surgery on my shoulder and I listened to my sessions every night before the surgery. They would say that I would be very relaxed and not have any pain, and I didn't. I didn't have any pain at all. I listened to them every night after the surgery and people would say, "Are you in pain?" and I would say, "I haven't had any pain with this and they just couldn't believe it". They would say, "oh what are you doing?" and I would say, "oh, I'm going to Positive Changes. I've had hypnosis and relaxation treatment and I have not had any pain with this surgery."
Six months later, a bone spur was discovered in a vertebra that was pressing on a nerve and causing pain. I stayed with my Positive Changes sessions, sat in on a class, and after the no-problem surgery, the severe pain was gone. It is now healed and I am back to walking every day and taking swim therapy.
Positive Changes Hypnosis also really helped with my stress. I was able to just put all of that out of my mind. I was also able to deal with some of the problems I've been having with other people. I don't let any of that get to me anymore. I just feel very relaxed and like a different person.
I started noticing the changes even before my shoulder surgery. I could sleep well. I would get up and look in the mirror, and instead of being depressed, I would look forward to the rest of the day. After I went through the surgery, I just felt very relaxed about it. I was glad I did it and it was so successful.
My family, especially my husband, has been very supportive about this. Other members of the family are very hesitant when I tell them about this program, but I told them I had faith and I knew hypnosis would work. I've also lost weight since beginning treatment. I no longer take medication for the pain in my feet, which used to make me gain weight. I'm taking 2 swimming aerobic classes and 2 regular aerobic classes a week so I'm building up a lot of muscle.
I guess I tried a lot of methods to try and to keep my weight down and try to deal with the pain and they just didn't work. I just walked into Positive Changes and I believed so much that this was the thing for me to do. I feel like a brand new person. I feel that every bit of money that I spent on this program has been worth it to me, mentally and physically. I've been able to come to terms with some people that I've had problems with and that's because of Positive Changes.
I would recommend Positive Changes to anyone who is really nervous about having surgery, or very nervous or hesitant about their life, or are under a lot of stress. In fact, when people tell me about the stress they're under, I tell them they should really think about coming to Positive Changes, it could really make a difference. Most say, "well I don't have the money", but I tell them that if they really want it, they will find a way and there are people who can help, or maybe there is a way financially that they could do it. I just think it's a wonderful program. My husband thinks it's great too. He sees the difference in me.
I believe in Positive Changes and I encourage people to put their heart and mind into their program, and use it for the rest of their life. The relaxation program is wonderful, and my family has noticed the changes in me. I have lost 15 pounds recently, and I have learned to not let people hurt me. I just want to love people and help others in need. I will always have some arthritis problems, but if I stay with my walking, swimming and relaxation programs, I can deal with that and I can keep smiling and enjoy life.
